Canberra Fires

Fire at Point Hut Crossing

Below are the photos we took of the fire that threatened our homes . At 1:30 we sent the girls to a safer place. Image 36 shows how dark it was at 3:30pm. At this point we had to drop everything - including the camera - and fight the fire. There was only 10 - 15 minutes between image 36 and image 37, and you can't see the wall of flames we were up against. There were big burning embers landing all over our garden, and the fire was about 30ft high, on Jim Pike Avenue, just at the end of our street - only 20m from our house. At two points the fire jumped the road and burnt against the neighbours fences. The noise was unbelievable, and the heat was unbearable and you just couldn't keep your eyes open. Just in time the fire brigade arrived and helped put the worst of the fire out, but some continued down Jim Pike Avenue towards Point Hut and the Murrimbidgee River. Not something I would like to see again, that is for sure.

Pictures of the Georgia Peach Air Crane can be viewed here.
A huge collection of photo's of the fire and the damage can be found on Darryl's Website and also at ABC Canberra.
