Canberra Morris Men 22 years on

Morris dancing is an ancient English fertility rite performed by a lively group of well practiced men resplendent in their flower-covered hats and bell clad legs.  The vigorous stepping, intricate figures and stick work are assisted by live musicians playing melodeons, fiddles and flutes all accompanied by considerable levity.

Traditionally Morris Men danced for the fertility of their women and the success of their harvest, while today we dance to entertain and to keep the old traditions alive.  Look for the symbolism in the sticking (defence), the flowers (life, spring) the bells (driving out demons) and the dance names (eg. "Haste to the Wedding" and "Getting Upstairs").

Morris Dancing is excellent entertainment for the who family and is best suited for close "village square" type contact with the crowd.  Our performances are sure to be a stimulating addition to your function and our rates are very reasonable (especially if you provide a few beers!!).

We are always looking for more men (of any age) who are interested in joining us as we learn more about the dances, the tunes, and the traditions.  Previous dancing experience is definitely not required, just a zest for living, and a good sense of humour.  A knowledge of the difference between Guiness and cider is an advantage!  All enquiries may be directed to the Bagman.
