CMA25 2002

Some of you may have heard or know of the fact that the Canberra Morris men are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year.  You may also be aware that we plan an ale for 8-9 June 2002 here in Canberra.

The current plan is to have a dance out around Canberra on Saturday 8 June starting around 10am, culminating with an ale and some more dancing in the evening.  We have booked the Carlton Room in the OLIMS Hotel Canberra on Limestone Ave, Canberra for our dinner/ale venue. It will be available to the side from 2pm to midnight on Saturday June 8. The room has its own bar which will be open to us from 5.30pm that night.

The venue is such that we can each feed, drink and dance to our heart's content. Rooms are also available if you prefer to be able to crawl/swagger to your room rather than bunk at someone's house.  Meals and drinks are available from the OLIMS bar bistro while the Carlton Room bar is closed. I have no doubt that the CMM bag will cover a swag of drinks from the Carlton Room bar after 5.30pm - hell even I may shout some!!

If any of you are planning to attend or would like to congratulate us then please let us know. Given that I am travelling until 7 June I suggest you can contact me my mobile alternatively an email to Joel or Leroy or any other Canberra man would also be OK.

Thanks Giuseppe

I have been thinking about the itinerary and thought it might be better to go to Curtin then Civic and then to Kingston. The crowds in Civic will be best late morning and not so good in the afternoon and Kingston will be a good place to have lunch.

Ian, you have completely stuffed my plans. I had always intended to start in Curtin at 9.30 but said 9 in the hope of actually starting by 10. Now that you have let the cat out of the bag we may be lucky to foot up before 11. You know what these CMM are like. I have booked the school bus ($88 plus fuel) so once people get to Curtin we could all go together (at least 22 of us).

The weather forecast for the weekend is not looking promising, we may have to do some last minute changes. It may also make the George Harcourt on Sunday a bit unpleasant, can we negotiate that on Saturday night? I had been thinking the AGM would be early afternoon but Ian's suggestion of immediately before the ale makes sense. As for Friday night - why not go to King O'Malley's Irish Pub in Civic. It would meet the requirement of Guinness and it is Central. It is a big place between the bus interchange and Garema place on City Walk. For those of you with only vague memories of Canberra geography I have attached a map, it is near Dick Smith Electrical.

Program for the Canberra Morris Men's Ale

In the days leading up to the Celebrations, Ian had suggested a draft program for Saturday, and with minor modifications by Joel (mostly to reflect reality) it happened, and went something like this:

9.00am-ish Gathered at Curtin for coffee and a danced at about 10am

10.30am Headed by bus to Civic for more dancing.

Thanks to Marg & Rita for their participation in Bonnie Green Garters

12.00am Travelled to Kingston for a dance.  Fortunately the Caffe Latte set were out and about, meaning we would have a potential audience, with change in their pockets!  We gathered at The Durham for light refreshments but were restricted to the confines of the beer garden away from the audience.   But a beer garden fence would never restrict the movements of a Morris Man on the hunt for a dance.

Break for the afternoon

4.30pm Gathered at Olim's Carlton Room for an AGM like never before...

5.00pm Wound up the AGM and started an evening of dance and song. All started arriving.   Personally I think I was feeling "over-chipped".
