Oz: Oz Education ======================================== Caption: How Australians are educated Blurb: All about the Aussie Schools system, the things that makes us all as smart as we are. The Australian education system varies slightly from state to state, and the ages for each level of education may vary by a year or two. The general model is: Pre School For kiddies aged around 4 - 6 years. This is usually in or near the Primary School. Very basic education; playing with things, painting, etc. Primary School Ages 6 to around 12. There are usually 7 years spent here, namely Kindergarten and years 1 through 6. This is where all the basic subjects are taught. At the end of primary school, your typical rugrat will know the basic maths operations inside out, have a firm grasp of the english language, including most common grammar, have a basic idea of the sciences and have done lots of sportie type things. Foreign languages are also taught at a low level. High School In most states, this is 6 years long (years 7 to 12), but in some (ie the A.C.T.), it is only 4 years long, with the final 2 years being completed in College. Typical ages are 13 to 18. High school students should have learnt all the subjects to basic adult levels or above by the end of year 10. There are also numerous electives such as languages, arts, extra sciences, outdoor ed, etc. University This is for the 19+ people, and can last as long as you want it to. Just about all imaginable courses can be found at at least one Australian University. TAFE TAFE (Technical and Further Education) is another option to university. It is effectively a trade school, and hands out diplomas and such like for all sorts of things. Apprenticeships Another option for tertiary education. These are taken directly with a business, and will often involve attendance at a TAFE for a few days a week, achieving a mix of theory and practice. The majority of students attend public schools and universities, but there is also a wide range of private schools at all levels. It is a legal requirement to attend a school until the end of year 10. Retention levels after that are between 70% and 90%. Public schools are free to Austalian citizens, but University attendance costs around $4000 a year (depending on your course), which can be paid directly for a 25% discount, or can be taken out as an intrest free loan from the government, to be paid back in installments when your salary is greater than something like $25,000 a year. This is called HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme). Children living in remote areas may be taught via school of the air, where a remote teacher conducts lessons over a radio. Also, small bush schools may consist of just one teacher and kids from year 1 to year 6, all in one classroom.
