This shows the state / territory boundaries (except for the
A.C.T.'s), the capital cities and some other major cities and
regional centres. There are 6 states and 2 territories. These are:



	+ New South Wales (N.S.W.)
	+ Queensland (Qld.)
	+ Victoria (Vic.)
	+ South Austrtalia (S.A.)
	+ Western Australia (W.A.)
	+ Tasmania (Tas.)
	+ Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.)
	+ Northern Territory (N.T.)



New South Wales (N.S.W.)



	+ State capital is Sydney
	+ Other major cities are Newcastle, Wollongong, Queanbeyan.
	+ Most populus of all states and territories.
	+ Weather varies with location: cold in the Blue Mountains
	and skifields, warmer at costal regions.
	+ Summer temperatures: 15 to 35 degrees Celcius (costal), 5
	to 35 degrees Celcius (mountains).
	+ Winter temperatures: 0 to 20 degrees Celcius, -15 to 5
	degrees Celcius (mountains).
	+ N.S.W. contains the Riverina district, a large aricultural
	area.
	+ Produces fruit, wheat, wool, silver.



Queensland (Qld.)



	+ State capital is Brisbane
	+ Other cities include Rockhampton, Cairns and Townsville.
	+ Second largest state.
	+ Weather is warm to tropical.
	+ Summer temperatures: 25 to 40 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: 5 to 25 degrees Celcius.
	+ Produces lots of tropical fruits due to warm climate,
	popular holiday destination for the same reason.
	+ Produces sheep, cattle, fruit, sugar, coal.



Victoria (Vic.)



	+ State capital is Melbourne.
	+ Other cities are Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.
	+ Second smallest state, second most populus.
	+ Weather is notoriously rainy and generally cool climate.
	+ Summer temperatures: 15 to 35 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: -5 to 15 degrees Celcius.
	+ Often known as the cultural centre of Oz.
	+ Produces wines, high - tech goods, manufactured goods and
	timber.



South Austrtalia (S.A.)



	+ State capital is Adelaide.
	+ Other cities include Heidelburg, Mount Gambier and Whyalla
	+ High european influence.
	+ Weather is "average" to hot.
	+ Summer temperatures: 15 to 45 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: -5 to 25 degrees Celcius.
	+ Large portion of the state is desert or semi - arid.
	+ Produces wines, sheep and wheat.



Western Australia (W.A.)



	+ State capital is Perth
	+ Other cties are Freemantle and Kalgoorlie
	+ Largest of all states and territories.
	+ Weather is hot and tropical. Prone to costal cyclones.
	+ Summer temperatures: 15 to 40 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: 5 to 25 degrees Celcius.
	+ Largely desert, lowest population density of any state /
	tertitory.
	+ Produces cattle, sheep, fish, oil, minerals and natural gas.



Tasmania (Tas.)



	+ Capital is Hobart.
	+ Other major city is Launceston.
	+ Smallest of all states.
	+ Weather is mostly cold.
	+ Summer temperatures: 10 to 30 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: -10 to 15 degrees Celcius.
	+ Large portion is National Park or other wilderness area.
	+ Produces wines, fine foods and fish.



Australian Capital Territory (A.C.T.)



	+ Territory capital is Canberra (also the national capital)
	+ No other cities
	+ Smallest of all states and territories.
	+ Weather is very "flexible", i.e. cold, windy and hailing
	followed by hot sunshine followed by a thunderstorm.
	+ Summer temperatures: 15 to 35 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: -5 to 15 degrees Celcius.
	+ 1/3 of the A.C.T. is taken up by Namadgi National Park.
	+ Produces wines and high - tech goods.



Northern Territory (N.T.)



	+ Territory capital is Darwin
	+ Other major city is Alice Springs
	+ Larger of the two territories.
	+ Weather is hot and dry.
	+ Summer temperatures: 25 to 45 degrees Celcius.
	+ Winter temperatures: 15 to 25 degrees Celcius.
	+ Approx 80% desert.
	+ Produces minerals, uranium and cattle.
