EXTREMELY RARE BENDIGO TASMAN TOBY JUG
COLONIAL AUSTRALIAN POTTERY

96 This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own an EXTREMELY RARE 19th Century Tasman Toby Jug. Made by Bendigo Pottery around the 1880's it has a Rockingham glaze and is in wonderful condition with no chips cracks or repairs. The glaze on the back of the jug has "bubbled " when it was made ,this gives it a unique earthly appeal.
It Has been suggested that this piece could have also been made by John Campbell of Tasmania though the one known example (of Campbell's) in Geoff Fords book is only 18cm high (having been made from a cast taken from the original Bendigo example)Note this coloured example was expressly made as an exhibition piece and remained in the Campbell family. The other known example is in the Shepparton Art Gallery's collection , having been purchased by them in 1981 in a damaged state from the Peter Van Doorn collection.

A quote from both of the above :- "Stan Paynter recalls finding many years ago, the original mould for this figure. stored away in the potteries loft,a repository of bygone items and records.Impressed 'TASMAN',this piece (# sic the one in Shepperton Art Gallery collection) has been considerably restored , but even so must be regarded as a rare and important item, recalling the long tradition of Staffordshire toby jugs......."

This Museum quality piece of Australian Ceramics will enhance any collection and prove a wise investment.
